Men's Health
Men's health is in crisis — not because men's bodies are failing, but because the culture around men's health is. On Pair-A-Docs, we have the conversations that men need and rarely get: about mental health, emotional life, relationships, and what genuine strength actually looks like.
Men die younger than women, are less likely to seek medical care, and are significantly underrepresented in mental health treatment. These are not biological inevitabilities — they are the consequences of cultural norms that discourage men from acknowledging vulnerability, seeking help, or even recognizing that they are struggling. On Pair-A-Docs, we challenge those norms directly.
Questions We Answer
- Why do men struggle to seek mental health help? The cultural norms that discourage men from acknowledging vulnerability are instilled from childhood and reinforced throughout life. We discuss where they come from and what they cost.
- What are the mental health challenges specific to high-performing men? The drive for achievement can create profound suffering when not balanced with self-awareness and emotional health. We discuss burnout, depression, and the emptiness that can follow success.
- How does men's emotional life affect their relationships? Men's difficulty with emotional intimacy affects their partners and relationships in ways that are worth understanding — and that can be changed with the right support.
- What does the data say about men's health outcomes? Men have higher rates of suicide, cardiovascular disease, and substance use disorders than women. These outcomes are connected to mental health and the reluctance to seek care.
- What does genuine strength look like? We challenge the equation of strength with stoicism and explore what it means to be a man who is willing to be honest about his inner life.
- How can partners support the men in their lives? Dr. Tammy Nelson discusses what partners can do to support men's emotional health — without taking on the work for them.
